FOR posterity, this work is meant to consolidate the many scattered historical writings connected with Edo Chieftaincy titles. What remains is to link them up with their origin as well as trace them to where they were exported as a result of Edo migration from their metropolitan Benin City which was the nucleus of the old empire. A close study of the titles of the various areas in Edo and Delta States of Nigeria shows that these titles derived their origin from the historical links which the components of these States have with Benin which is the pivot of the old Benin Empire. It is not possible to list all the titles in the various areas of these two States but a few examples will suffice to illustrate how much of these titles have been exported to the components of the States. The list below highlights the common titles (the spellings have slight variations due to ethnic or dialectal differences) which were exported to other areas of the old empire:
